Granite belongs to intrusive rocks in acidic (SiO2>66%) magmatic rocks

Release time:

2023-11-16

Granite belongs to the intrusive rock in the acid (SiO2>66%) magmatic rock, which is the most common kind of rock, mostly light red, light gray, gray and so on. Medium coarse grain, fine grain structure, massive structure. There are also some speckled structure, spherical structure, like flake like structure etc. The main minerals are quartz, potassium feldspar and acid plagioclase, while the secondary minerals are biotite, amphibole and sometimes a small amount of pyroxene. There are many kinds of accessory minerals, such as magnetite, titanite, zircon, apatite, tourmaline, fluorite and so on.

Granite belongs to the intrusive rocks in the acidic (SiO2>66%) magmatic rocks, which is the most common type of rock in this category, mostly light red, light gray, gray, and so on. Medium-coarse, fine-grained structure, block structure. There are also some complex structures, spherical structures, like gneiss-like structures. The main minerals are quartz, potassium feldspar and acid plagioclase, while the secondary minerals are biotite, amphibole, and sometimes a small amount of pyroxene. There are many kinds of accessory minerals, including magnetite, sphene, zircon, apatite, tourmaline and fluorite. Quartz content is the most of all kinds of magmatic rocks, its content can be from 20-50%, a few can reach 50-60%. The content of potassium feldspar is generally more than plagioclase, the content of the two is often the 2/3 of the total amount of potassium feldspar, plagioclase accounting for 1/3, potassium feldspar in granite is mostly light red, gray and gray. Gray-white potassium feldspar and plagioclase are often not easy to distinguish on hand specimens. At this time, we should carefully observe the characteristics of the two kinds of feldspar, because the plagioclase double crystal, turning hand specimens can be seen to plagioclase crystal has a regular light and dark phase of the cladding, and the potassium feldspar for the type of double crystal.

Granite can also be further named according to the type of dark minerals, such as dark minerals are mainly biotite, which can be called biotite granite, which is a common granite. Such as biotite and muscovite, its content is close to the same, can be called two mica granite, if the dark mineral is mainly amphibole, it is called hornblende granite, if the dark mineral is mainly pyroxene, it is called pyroxene granite, almost no dark mineral can be called white gangite.
